I have loved and recommended this book for over thirty years. I just reread it on my kindle. Funny as one ages, the things discovered during a reread that weren't noticed the first time through. This book is considered an American classic and I was really excited to read that it has now been reissued. The story of Gertie, a talented whittler, a physically strong woman who loved the land and her family and sacrificed herself for them has remained in my heart since I first read this novel. The book also gives an inside view of the mores and the times that occurred before and during World War II, especially for women. It is a great read that will remain with you for a long time.

A great read that mixes just enough fiction with historical fact especially to those of us who lived during WWII. It traces one family from their coal mining Appalachian roots through its migration to earning a living in the industrialized city of Detroit. It raised a serious question which life was actually better and in what ways? Existence became no more than a matter of survival skills in Detroit and the standard of living was extremely poor. It showed the influence of both management and the growth of unions in this turbulent period of War. Again, for those who lived it, perhaps in different parts of the country, it brings back a variety of memories...some that can be viewed as valuable and positive, even when at the time the events all seemed to be extremely negative!

I read this book for the first time when I was probably 19 years old. That was a long time ago, but I have never forgotten this story it had a tremendous impact on me. Recently I read Hillbilly Elegy and I thought of this book and searched it out. It's part of who we are, it's grimy, real, and painful but beautiful.
She does it all for her family. I'm not sure I've ever met anyone that is as strong as she. I enjoyed a lot the descriptions of how it was to live in that era in that place... since I grew up there. The scenes in this book come back to my thoughts long after I finished the book. This was picked for my book club to read but I wasn't able to read it at that time. Glad I finally got to read it.
This book is one of the best books I've ever read. I read it the first time many years ago and have never gotten it out of my mind. This book will be especially interesting to anyone interested in Appalachia. Parts of my family were/are from that area and after reading this book, I really began to understand the family dynamics. It's a great book.
This is absolutely a wonderful book! The author places you into her life, her longings, her heartbreaks. As someone who also loves living in the country, the hills, even living a rough, "back to the land" existence, Arnow captures all of the sensory experiences. She describes the sights, smells, the touch better than any other author I have ever read. The book is breathtaking. I absolutely love the movie, but this book expresses so much more. It is so very hard to put down once you begin reading.
Whoa. Stunningly beautiful. Gertie's strengths and weaknesses are an integral part in this story, where she makes choices and then choices are made for her. And it's excruciating. It ties together so many elements, like poverty, industrialization and migration, religion, politics, war, money, relationships between women, and family. It starts off with a bang and ends up nowhere near where I thought it would. The author doesn't hold back or wait for you to catch up. It's unlike current novels, where everything is laid out and repeated multiple time to make sure you follow along; instead she just assumes you'll figure it out and moves on, which I really appreciated. This is a great read for anyone who likes historical fiction about women's lives, and stories about family hardship. (It'd be an interesting book to use in a classroom setting.)
I have just finished this book for at least the fifth time. It has met me at many ages as I traverse my life from moon to moon. This is the compelling and realistic novel about a hill family who relocates from Kentucky farm country to Detroit during World War II. The family is required to adjust, adjust, adjust and those who cannot are ripped away. One of the best qualities of Arnow's writing is that she tells a well rounded story about many cultures as the crash together in the worker slums near the Flint Plants but she never gives in to having any of her characters rant to explain their points of view. She shows, she doesn't tell and she counts on the reader's emotional intelligence to understand her. All time classic work!
