The Secret A Steampunk Short Story A Boston Metaphysical Society Story eBook Madeleine HollyRosing Reviews
Madeline Holly-Rosing is the writer of the steampunk webcomic "Boston Metaphysical Society" and this novelette is associated with that comic. You don't have to be a follower of the comic, though, to understand and enjoy this story.
Samuel Hunter is a former Pinkerton detective now free-lancing in an "alternate Boston." Hired as a bodyguard for the daughter of one of Boston's richest residents, Samuel finds out she carries a secret she is desperately trying to hide from her father. Samuel knows and understands what the secret is, though, even though his charge has not told him. What happens next is.... You'll have to read the story to find out.
Well-crafted with interesting characters. Only problem is, it ends too soon! I really wanted to read more about these two. That's good story-telling.
Note This short story is set in the Boston Metaphysical Society webcomic universe. It stands perfectly well on it's own, but you will get deeper appreciation of it if you are familiar with the comic.
By all appearances Elizabeth Weldsmore is the perfect high society daughter, but she works much more at it than anyone knows. A troubling secret has haunted her since the age of nine, and will be harder than ever to protect now that her father has hired a full time bodyguard to watch over her...
Boston Metaphysical Society and it's related stories take place in an alternate 1800's Boston where steampunk technology flourished. The world is extremely well thought out and built and all of the technology and social details are expertly conveyed without slowing down or distracting from the story. The characters are engaging and intriguing (doubly so coupled with their connections to the comic).
I found the pacing a little uneven in this one, as the resolution felt a little rushed and note quite on par with the fantastic setup done in the beginning. There are also a few details glossed over (presumable to be explained in fuller detail in future stories) whose absence does detract from the plot a tad.
These are minor criticisms though - overall The Secret is another solid piece in an excellent collection of work set in a beautifully developed alternate history. I highly recommend the BMS universe in all of it's forms.
Exceptionally constructed story that provides a keen look into the comic world of the Boston Metaphysical Society. I realised nothing about this genre until I read this tale - I am a fan now and will be reading her other work in time.
Hat's off to the author and of course understanding the world of the comic is helpful but not mandatory. The Secret stands on its own as a fine story, tightly written, visual and pleasing.
Not a bad read at all (not sure why I didn't finish it immediately, must have gotten distracted and forgotten which eBooks I was reading at the time.) The only part I wasn't really happy with was the ending but I can't really say why without spoiling it. It was good enough however that I will check out the other Boston Metaphysical Society stories.
This short story is set in a past of steam and gears, a time when a few privileged families rule from their clockwork redouts, and the possession of psychic abilities are a source of shame and suspicion. Those so afflicted--Mediums--keep their gifts secret, even from their own families. The characters are well developed, the dialogue crisp, and the plot tight. A well-written foray into the world of steampunk.
I must say this author had me from the first page of this book. Great detail is within its pages. Loved how this author describes the characters throughout. She has a new fan. Loved it. I would recommend this book to book lovers. Great job.
